Patient participation

A big key to combatting medical error is to get rid of this ridiculous notion that the doctor knows what’s best for you and you should just do whatever the doctor tells you to do.  Even if she does know what’s best, she is a human being, she makes mistakes.  There has been a massive effort in aviation to teach copilots how to work with pilots, because it’s a plain obvious truth that two brains are more likely to find errors than one.

The Society for Participatory Medicine is one organization trying to promote the idea that patients should be copilots in their care.  Have a look at what they say:
